Fly question

Hey guys I recently got a canary from my grandfather but he has always been in a cage and never got to fly outside a bit, I was wondering if I can let him fly a bit in my room, maybe he gets too scared when I will get him to put him back and he will hurt himself flying around? Idk.

Thanks.
