Why always snow?

I am new to painting StD and have noticed that a lot of people seem to give their models snow and ice bases. Is there a particular reason for this? I am personally going with a more brown/tan desert dry and dead base motif. I am just curious what others are doing and why 80% of what I see is frozen.
