[Left alone: Just 2% of trans people stay with parents](https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/left-alone-just-2-of-trans-people-stay-with-parents/articleshow/65380226.cms)

>In first ever study conducted on the human rights of "transgenders" in India, the National Human Rights Commission has stated that the rights of transgenders are "largely compromised" and they are in a sense of isolation, within households, communities and institutions, amid rampant societal gender discrimination.

>**The study finds that 99% of transgenders have suffered social reections on more than one occasions.**

>Elaborating on discrimination of transgenders, which begins from childhood, NHRC says 'parents do not play a proactive role in the case of transgender children. Instead, **they suffer verbal and corporal abuses at the hands of their parents, siblings and other family members**. "Most of them keep their identities as transgender secret till it is impossible for them to hide it forever. Most parents consider their status as physical and mental defects", it says, adding that **transgenders also do not enjoy any legal right in the property inheritance.**

>On their education, NHRC says 52% transqenders were harassed by their classmates and 15% by even teachers, a **reason due to which they don't continue studies.**

>When it comes to access to justice, the study reveals that they are harassed by police hence they don't approach the cops. It goes on to say that **"there are cases of gangrape of transgender people, but they can't approach a police station fearing harassment".** "Some of them reported that they try to present themselves as male to avoid rapes," it adds.

[India has less than 600 trans school students, shows government data](https://www.queerbeat.org/stories/india-has-less-than-600-trans-school-students-shows-government-data/)

>Over 21 crore students were enrolled across India’s government and private unaided schools during the 2024-’25 academic year. Of these, only 565 were transgender, shows [data](https://www.education.gov.in/sites/upload_files/mhrd/files/parliament_annexure_en/RSUQ_2074.pdf) tabled in the Rajya Sabha during the Parliament’s Winter Session in 2025.

>In 2014, a Supreme Court judgment affirmed the rights of trans people to self-identify themselves. The court directed the Centre and Indian states to extend affirmative actions for trans people in educational institutions, as well as public appointments. In [2020](https://www.pib.gov.in/Pressreleaseshare.aspx?PRID=1847880&reg=3&lang=2), India’s National Education Policy—a framework to guide the development of education in the country—identified transgender children as part of socio-economically disadvantaged groups, and aimed to provide them with equitable opportunities through community-based interventions that address context-specific barriers.

>India’s schools—which run from early childhood to the end of higher secondary—have been required to include a “third gender” or transgender category in their forms. (It is not clear whether all schools provide this option.) Since this data would include only those students who formally identified themselves as trans, it is likely an undercount. **Many trans students may choose not to disclose their identities because they fear encountering bullying and prejudice at their schools.** In fact, as early [news reports](https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/nagpur/schools-to-add-third-gender-option-in-forms/articleshow/45210483.cms) on the directive noted, **parents were also reluctant to disclose their child’s gender identity because of their own stigmas.**

[Why renting a home remains a struggle for transgender residents in Pune](https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/pune/transgender-housing-discrimination-pune-rental-challenges-india-10750508/)

>For many transgender people in [Pune](https://indianexpress.com/section/cities/pune/), the first problem is much more basic: ‘Is there anyone who will rent to me?’ **Conversations with transgender people reveal that they are subject to rejection, exclusion, financial pressure, and discrimination on the part of landlords and housing societies.**

>Manasvi Goilkar, a transgender activist and a transgender woman, believes that the struggle stems from deeply rooted stereotypes. “People still think transgender people are involved only in begging or sex work,” she said. “And that needs to change."

[The Transgender And Unemployment In India](https://www.outlookindia.com/national/transgender-and-unemployment-in-india-news-182617)

* According to a study conducted by the National Human Rights Commission in 2018, **96%** transgenders are **denied jobs** and are **forced to take low paying or undignified work** for livelihood like badhais, sex work and begging.
* The first-ever study on the rights of transgenders also revealed that about **92%** of transgenders are **deprived of the right to participate in any form of economic activity in the country**, with even qualified ones refused jobs.
* Among the respondents, around **89%** of transgenders said there are **no jobs for even qualified ones.**
* **50-60% never attended schools** and those who did face severe discrimination, according to the report.
* Only 6% transgenders were employed in private sectors or NGOs, back then, while the monthly income of only 1 per cent transgenders was noted to be above Rs.25,000; **the majority-26.35% earn between Rs. 10,000-Rs.15,000.**

>The report further revealed that around **23% are compelled to engage in sex work** which has high health-related risks, which results in trans people being **49 times more at risk of living with HIV compared to the general population.**

"You use this place (red light) like a slur but my sisters are stuck here and not by choice. When they told their truth at home, they were thrown out. When they went for education, they were bullied out of school. People refuse to give them homes to rent and deny them jobs."
