1996 Reform Party Vice Presidential Selection Round #2 | The Kennedy Dynasty
Reform Party Presidential nominee Mike Gravel is getting closer to choosing his running mate for the 1996 election. Two candidates withdrew their names from consideration, leaving four of Gravel's top choices still available. Here's how it all went down:
National Reform Party Chairman Beryl Anthony has removed himself from vice presidential consideration. Reportedly, he is all in on Richard Stallings as Gravel's running mate, and dropped out of contention in an attempt to boost Stallings's chances of getting selected. David Boren is out too, declining to proceed to the second round of interviews and instead focusing on a different job opportunity. A spot has opened up on the Oklahoma State Board of Regents for Higher Education, and Boren is lobbying Governor Wes Watkins for the open spot.
With Anthony and Boren out, Gravel is left with four top choices: Bob Kerrey, Richard Stallings, Gene Taylor, and George Wallace Jr. Taylor and Wallace are still the two heavy favorites, although Kerrey has a long history of loyalty to Gravel and Stallings has strong support from party leadership. A decision is not imminent yet.
