Am I overreacting by expecting support after 6 years together?

❤️‍🩹 relationship

I’m 29F, and after a six-year relationship, I’m struggling to understand how everything ended this way.

I come from a small town and was in a long-distance relationship with a man I genuinely thought I would marry.

For six years, we stayed together despite the distance and all the difficulties that came with it. I believed that when the time came, we would build a life together.

Then my father had a serious accident, and my life changed completely. I was dealing with family responsibilities, fear, financial pressure and a lot of emotional stress. I wasn't myself. I had mood swings and became emotionally difficult at times.

Instead of understanding what I was going through, he eventually said that he couldn't handle my mood swings and left me.

Because we were long-distance, he also started believing that I was cheating on him. I wasn't.

What hurts even more is something he said when he left: that I only wanted to be with him because I couldn't get anyone else.

That sentence has stayed with me.

After six years, I never thought the person I loved would see my love that way.

There was also disagreement about marriage. I didn't want to live with his parents after marriage. I wanted us to have our own space and build our own household. I wasn't asking for an expensive wedding. I don't have the financial capacity for that. I was already under a lot of financial pressure, and all I wanted was a simple court marriage.

I wasn't asking him to give me a lavish life. I wanted a partner, some emotional support and a simple beginning together.

But perhaps somewhere along the way, we stopped wanting the same things.

I know I wasn't perfect. I know my mood swings could have been difficult for him, and I'm willing to accept my part in what happened. But I also keep wondering whether I was expecting too much by wanting my partner of six years to stand beside me when my family was going through a crisis.

I'm 29 now, and I'm trying to accept that six years of love don't necessarily mean two people are right for each other in the long run.

Was I asking for too much? Or is wanting support, trust and a simple life together a reasonable expectation after six years?
