Review 3 years after release
I got my hands on the game about 20 days ago and put roughly 35 hours into it to complete it. Now I'm going for NG+, so I just wanted to share my opinions on it.
Visually speaking, it's great. It has some problems with lighting, though. Like, you can be in a very dark place, and out of nowhere it gets extremely bright. I think this should have been a point for them to work on more in the next game.
Combat-wise, yeah, it's repetitive. It didn't bother me that much, though. I just wish there were more variations of attacks. For example, if you could get a transformation move and add it to your base moveset, that would be a nice change. Also, regarding the transformations, I didn't really bother to use or test them. Same with the spirits. I did use the immobilizing one and the clone thingy for quite a while, but after a while, I realized that the spell that blocks magic was the best for me or just using nothing aswell, because I don't like using these things. I just go into boss fights without using medicine for buffs or anything.
Boss quality: Unfortunately, extremely poor. I came into the game expecting a real challenge, and I basically steamrolled every single boss. I believe I beat 95% of them on my first try. I beat the final boss on my first try, and the "true final" boss in the Great Pagoda took me two tries. So yeah, I think the game is extremely easy. I ain't no god, though. I just thought the game would be harder.
One downside as well is the platinum trophy. There are a lot of hidden/missable things and RNG-based drops. The last platinum that gave me this type of PTSD was Returnal, with those RNG collectibles.
Overall, it's a solid game, like a 7/10. A good beginning for a company making their first game. I hope they improve a lot, in their upcoming game.
