Why do stacked plastic cups get stuck together so hard you can't pull them apart, even though nothing about them changed?

You grab two cups from the stack, they're bone dry, no water, no heat, nothing weird happened to them. Somehow they're welded together like they're one solid piece. You end up basically wrestling them apart or running the bottom one under hot water like it's a jar lid. Why do they get stuck like that?
