Folk Song Identification?
I was walking around town and got hit with a childhood memory of a song out of the blue. I think my dad (from Eastern KY, Monticello area) used to play it on the banjo when I was little. I googled the lyrics I remembered, and hummed the tune, and the search engines didn't turn anything up. I mainly remember the chorus being "Took a little" (pronounced like tookalil'), with the story being someone traveling and foraging and making a stew or something (I think it was funny? like a adding a shoe to the pot or something like that).
This is what I was able to piece together as far as the structure of the song goes. The tune is really simple, just CEFD (do mi fa re) repeated:
-- Verse --
Walking down the river, walking through the woods (do do mi mi fa fa reeee -repeats-)
Found myself a ___ and threw it in the ____
Got a lil' ___ and got a lil' __
Took a lil' ____ and took a lil' _____ ( -high- So so soooo, -lower octave, ascending- So ti doooo)
-- Chorus --
Took a little, took a little, took a lil' ___ (do do mi mi fa fa reeee -repeats-)
Took a little, took a little, took a lil' ___
Took a little, took a little, took a lil' ___
Took a lil' ____ and took a lil' _____ ( -high- So so soooo, -lower octave, ascending- So ti doooo)
--
Is this familiar to anyone? When I researched it I have heard that alot of songs were so regional to the point of it being only family or communities. It's been stuck in my head and I can't remember the rest or find it anywhere else. Is this just lost forever? How do I learn more?
