What genres did you go through before you got into metal?

Discussion Topic

I woke up with a question today.

How do people actually arrive at metal?

My own path was something like: pop ➡️ jazz ➡️classical ➡️metal.

Pop was basically where my relationship with music started. Which probably isn’t unusual, it’s everywhere, and I suspect it also tends to ask less from an inexperienced listener’s attention.

Then jazz entered my life. Then classical music. And only relatively recently did I actually start listening to metal. Although metal itself wasn’t new to me. It had always existed somewhere in my bubble (friends and people around me listened to it) so when I finally started exploring it myself, I wasn’t exactly arriving from zero.

And now I’m curious about everyone else’s route. Did you go straight into metal? Or was there some completely different genre that trained your ears first?

What did your path look like?
