One positioning lesson we learned while building a Discord SaaS
One thing that took us longer than expected was explaining where our product sits between SaaS and self hosting.
We initially focused too much on the feature list.
Moderation, logs, AutoMod, registration, statistics and invite tracking.
The problem was that none of those features actually explained why the product needed to exist.
The clearer positioning became this:
The customer owns the Discord bot.
We own the operational burden.
That immediately creates a much clearer distinction between a shared SaaS bot and a completely self hosted bot.
It also changed how we designed the onboarding, pricing page and landing page because ownership became the core concept instead of another feature.
We are applying this to Daptera now, but I think the lesson is broader.
If your SaaS sits between DIY and fully managed software, explaining exactly what the customer owns and what you manage can be much stronger than listing another ten features.
For anyone building managed SaaS products, have you found ownership to be a useful positioning angle?
