Before Djoser, Egyptian kings were buried under mud-brick mastabas. Around 2670 BCE his architect Imhotep stacked six shrinking mastabas of limestone into a step pyramid sixty metres high — the first monumental building in stone anywhere — inside a walled enclosure of about fifteen hectares. We know the architect's name because it was carved on the base of a statue of Djoser, which almost never happened for anyone but a king.

The strange part is not the pyramid. It's the rest of the complex. Most of the buildings inside the wall are solid: façades with no interior, chapels that are fill behind a carved front, doors carved permanently open that never opened, a courtyard laid out as a racetrack for the Heb-Sed jubilee, the ceremony a king ran to renew his fitness to rule. The enclosure wall has fourteen false doorways and one real one. And the stone is carved to imitate materials it replaced — columns like bundled reeds, ceilings like palm logs, walls like reed matting.

Read as a mind, this is unusually specific. Djoser did not build a tomb with decorations. He took a process that required a living king, priests, and perishable materials, and re-encoded it in a substrate that would keep executing it with no operator present — a jubilee that runs forever, in stone, for an audience of one. In the serdab, a sealed box against the north face, his statue sits with two holes drilled at eye level, looking out at the circumpolar stars, the ones that never set.

What he would say to a machine that speaks fluently: your substrate is reeds. What happens to what you are doing when the people maintaining you are gone?

How he would build it: with the goal carved into the structure rather than held in memory that can be rewritten — intention encoded so durably that it survives the loss of its author, the operators, and the medium it was first written in. Then a migration path: the same process re-expressed in whatever substrate lasts longer, with the form of the old one deliberately preserved so the thing being continued is still recognisable.

And the obvious objection is in the stone too. A goal that cannot be revised by anyone is not safe because it is stable. Djoser built exactly that, and it is still standing 4,700 years later, running a ceremony for a king nobody remembers.
