New iPhone user and I cannot understand this keyboard

I type one letter wrong in the word and I cannot just tap where I want to delete the character I am forced to delete the whole sentence until I get to the point, or I can use a autocorrect suggestion (terrible)
I can’t even slide the space bar to move my keyboard curser but I suspect that is enable-able through settings but I can’t find it
