Gen Z or just me?
I’m a local team lead but I often work independently as an IC.
Am I losing it? Is this just me?
I’m 3 for 3 with folks in their first professional roles. I’m now in my 40s.
I’m often saying things like:
“Please indicate in the affirmative if you have read this email, understand and accept the assignment. Also indicate if for any reason you cannot.”
“Please use written communication to provide updates, status and alert if there are roadblocks. Before leaving for vacation, jot up brief status notes.”
“Please if you cannot attend a meeting or joint effort, please sick-out not just to the supervisor’s email (who is themselves on leave and not monitoring) but keep going till you notify a person who is working today.”
“Please talk to your team member and work out how to do this together.”
“If you have been repeatedly trained on a task, yes, it is very likely that you will be expected to do this task independently soon. That’s why you’re being trained.”
“If you’re asked to do something, please do it. Or let someone know if you cannot. Like. *You actually have to do it.* By the date indicated.”
Am I mental? WTF is in the water? 😂
I don’t know if I’m babying staff and if they’d benefit from my unleashing the perimenopausal “what the actual f*ck?” inner thoughts. I *know* that I worked for lower skill, disorganized, passive-aggressive, uncommunicative entry level managers when I was their age. Maybe I’m overcompensating by being too direct and clear?
