Dealing with long wait time for diagnosis
I have found numerous bald spots in my hair and my doctor has put forward a referral to see a dermatologist, is doing blood work and will give me steroid shots. However, I can’t get a diagnosis without seeing the dermatologist, which will take about 6 months or more [note - I am not interested in debating the merits of a public health care system, which i fully support, despite not being perfect. This is not life threateningly urgent, despite it feeling that way to me.]
I have a history of auto immune, so my doctor is pretty sure it’s alopecia. The spots feel tingly and itchy, which I’ve read is typical for flare ups for many people. The combination of the unknown nature of it (you can’t know how much hair you’ll lose, if it’ll grow back, etc) plus not having a diagnosis, is making me crazy. My mom lost hair due to chemotherapy years ago so I do have someone close to me who understands how world rocking it can be for women to lose hair, which is helping. I am pursuing mental health support. I feel like I’m having a nervous breakdown and struggling to be a good mom and a functional person.
Has anyone else dealt with this? How do you deal with the unknown?
