FCC seeks comment on Ocean Signal rescueME MOB2 waiver request (DA-26-975)
On September 14, 2026, the FCC's Wireless Telecommunications Bureau opened a public-comment proceeding on Ocean Signal Ltd.'s request to certify and use its rescueME MOB2 Man Overboard device, a Maritime Survivor Locating Device (MSLD), under newer RTCM Standard 11901.2.
Why it matters: Part 95 currently incorporates RTCM Standard 11901.1. Ocean Signal says the MOB2 uses Automatic Identification System (AIS) plus VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) to send position data and a distress alert to nearby vessels and rescue authorities. This is a waiver request, not an equipment authorization or a final rule change.
Key details:
- Proceeding: WT Docket No. 26-251
- FCC document: DA-26-975
- Requested rule relief: 47 CFR Section 95.2989(b)(1)(ii)
- Comments due: October 5, 2026
- Reply comments due: October 15, 2026
- The proceeding is permit-but-disclose; ex parte presentations must be documented under the FCC's rules.
