Humans (and elves) are always a pain, and the upgrade set has TENS of them. (Oh, and I bought three sets :P They're a great source of enemies and heroes, and come with their own stat cards and dice. However, only the hero miniatures (I think) go with the hero cards in the core box. I think these hero cards are the revised version.

Anyway, I went with contrast so I could SEE the miniatures on the tabletop. Pictures online are all over the place with what colors to use, so I went with gold and black, rather than silver, which doesn't stand out as much. I used a gold gel pen to get all those details. Some grey on the black folds as highlights.

Do whatever eye technique works best for you. I ended up with dabbing a little white-grey followed by carefully applied black wash for the eye sockets. Also, I applied dark wash to the mouth and whatever torture device they have in their hands. I wet the surface of the face to better apply the wash, by, yes, licking it. They're male elves, so they're okay with that sort of thing. :P

I find textured bases a pain, since I have much better results for much less effort with sand bases. For the stones, I painted them grey, washed them with black wash, then painted them grey again, leaving cracks and edges dark. If I had time, I'd add another lighter grey.
