**Set Yourself Up for Success**

Most people know what they should be doing. Eat better. Train consistently. Drink enough water. Get enough sleep. Hit your protein. Take care of your health.

Knowing isn't usually the problem. Doing it consistently is.

And that's where discipline comes in. But discipline doesn't have to mean waking up at 4 a.m., making your life unnecessarily difficult, or forcing yourself through the same decisions every single day. Sometimes discipline means building a life that makes it easier to do the things you already know you need to do.

**Nobody Can Hold You Accountable Like You Can**

You can convince everyone else. You can tell your trainer you were too busy. Tell your spouse work got crazy. Tell your friends you'll start again Monday.

But you know.

You know whether you skipped the workout because you legitimately needed rest or because you didn't feel like going. You know whether you hit your protein. You know whether you've been taking care of yourself. Nobody is going to hold you accountable the way you can.

Every time you follow through on something you told yourself you were going to do, you're building trust with yourself. Do that consistently enough and something starts to change. You start believing yourself when you say, “I'm going to do this.”

That's discipline.

**The Goal Is to Stop Negotiating with Yourself**

At first, going to the gym might require motivation. Eventually, it shouldn't.

The goal is to practice these behaviors long enough that they stop feeling like individual decisions and become part of your lifestyle. I don't want to wake up every morning and decide whether I'm going to get enough protein that day. I don't want to negotiate with myself about going to the gym. I want those things ingrained in how I live.

You don't have to be perfect. But eventually, some things should become non-negotiable.

No excuses. Just results.

**Build Systems**

I'm a very busy person, so I'm constantly looking for ways to make my life more efficient. I like building systems.

Every Sunday, I try to set up as much of my week as possible. I'll steam the shirts I want to wear. I'll pick out my workout outfits. I'll portion out my protein. I'll prepare my electrolytes, magnesium, vitamins, peptides, and other parts of my routine.

None of these things individually saves a massive amount of time. Add them together over a week, month, or year? Now we're talking.

More importantly, I've removed opportunities for excuses. Wednesday afternoon isn't the time to start figuring out what I need for Wednesday afternoon.

Be intentional. Be proactive.

**Make Your Goals Easier to Hit**

Nutrition is another perfect example. When I have time, I'll make my own meal preps. When I don't, I'll order them from a meal-prep service or restaurant.

You can order family-size meals and portion them yourself. You can take advantage of high-protein options restaurants already offer. There are plenty of ways to do this.

If you have meals sitting in your refrigerator with the protein, calories, and macros already calculated, you've removed a bunch of decisions from your day. What am I eating? Do I have enough protein? Does this fit my macros? Do I have time to cook?

Already answered. The meal is there. The numbers are there. Eat it.

You still have to put in the work. The system just increases the odds that you will.

That's the point. We're not trying to make health effortless. We're trying to remove unnecessary friction. Simplify what can be simplified. Automate what can be automated. Prepare what can be prepared. Then put your effort where effort is actually required.

**Build Systems That Leave Receipts**

I use an app on my iPhone to track how much water I drink every day. I have my own personal hydration goal, and when I log my water, I want to complete the goal.

The app isn't drinking the water for me. It's creating awareness and accountability. And if I don't hit the goal? There's a record of that too.

The same thing happens with meal prep. If Tuesday's protein is still sitting there Wednesday morning, I know I missed it.

Build systems that leave receipts.

You don't need to obsessively track every second of your life. But keep track of the things you actually care about. Small things aren't so small when they consistently affect your health.

Make the invisible visible.

**Put Your Mask on First**

There's another part of discipline that people, especially people with families, demanding careers, and a lot of responsibility, can forget.

Take care of yourself.

There's a reason airlines tell you to put your own oxygen mask on before helping your child with theirs. It's not because you're more important. It's because if you lose consciousness, you're not going to be much help to the person sitting next to you.

Life isn't much different.

Dolly Parton recently passed away, and not long before her death she talked openly about something that really stuck with me. Her husband, Carl, had been sick for a long time, and so much of her focus and energy went toward taking care of him that she stopped properly taking care of herself. She let some of her own health needs fall behind.

It's an incredibly relatable mistake. You can become so focused on being a good parent, spouse, caretaker, employee, boss, or provider that you slowly stop taking care of the person everyone is depending on.

Taking care of yourself is part of taking care of the people who depend on you.

Feed your body what it needs. Feed your mind. Train. Rest. Get your checkups. Pay attention when something doesn't feel right.

You take care of everyone else. Don't forget to maintain the person they depend on.

**Create Your Own Version of Accountability**

Your system doesn't need to look like mine. Maybe Sunday isn't your preparation day. Maybe you hate meal prepping. Maybe you don't care about tracking water.

Fine. What matters to you? What are the areas of your life where you want to invest your time, money, and energy?

Start there.

Use the resources available to you. Apps. Calendars. Reminders. Meal services. Coaches. Doctors. Trainers. Wearables. Prepared food. Automatic deliveries. Whatever genuinely helps you follow through.

Investing in something that gives you time back or improves your consistency isn't cheating. It's infrastructure.

Stop repeatedly spending time and mental energy solving problems you've already solved.

**Set Yourself Up for Success**

Goals are important. Intentions are important. But intentions without infrastructure leave you relying on willpower every day.

Build an environment that supports what you're trying to accomplish. Build habits that become routines. Build routines that become systems. Build systems that become a lifestyle.

You will still have to show up. You'll still have to train. You'll still have to eat the meal. You'll still have to drink the water. You'll still have to make difficult choices when life gets messy.

But you can increase the odds that you'll make the right ones.

Discipline gets you to do the work. Systems make it easier to keep doing the work.

Set yourself up for success.
