Overseas travel notice on ANZ app - does it actually prevent card blocks?

Heading to Singapore and Japan next week. I set up the travel notification in the ANZ app, but last time I went OS my card got flagged and temporary-blocked on the very first transaction at a convenience store. Do you still call the international support line before flying out, or relies entirely on the app notification nowadays?
