The Next Era of suyu (a public invitation)

PinnedNews

Hello again.

I said this was the final version and that I’d be archiving everything and disappearing. I meant it. I’ve only stuck around this long because a few people actually seemed interested in continuing the project, and I didn’t want to just dump it and walk away without at least trying to hand it off properly, as I did say I would transfer it to any willing developers.

So before I go, I’m inviting these devs onto the project so it can keep going under a successor.

The main person I’m inviting to hand things over to is:
https://github.com/dougchansan/suyu-v0.0.4

I’m also inviting the creator of the new fork called drippu:
https://github.com/SourCreamCulture/drippu

If they agree to the terms below, the org/project is theirs. I’ll transfer ownership of the org and repos to them and I will be disappearing as planned:

  1. No racing the version number with tiny updates. So far the fork has already jumped to v0.0.10 for what are basically just hotfixes of v0.0.4. That’s not how versioning is supposed to work. If it’s still mostly the same base with a bunch of small fixes, it should stay something like 0.0.4 until a big milestone. Don’t inflate the number every few days.
  2. Keep proper backups of the codebase. Private copies, public mirrors, other platforms, self-hosting, whatever. Just don’t put everything in one place and hope for the best.
  3. Pull emulation improvements from Eden every month or so and offer up any of suyu's improvements to Eden as well. The point of this project is not to compete with Eden, it is to provide people with a multi-use tool that complements the hard work of the Eden team. Focus on keeping it as that tool, more portable, more useful, more satisfying to actually open and use. Emulation improvements are fine and encouraged, just don’t lose the other half of the point.
  4. Restore and expand the build platforms that got dropped. The dougchansan fork removed Libretro, macOS, and iirc Android as well. Those need to come back. The original v0.0.4 had broader platform support for a reason.

I’m still leaving. I’ve only stayed this long because enough people showed interest in keeping it alive. If doug (and preferably the drippu dev too) are willing to take it under those conditions, it’s theirs. I’m also open to more devs joining, the more the better, as long as the direction stays sensible and that they are quick about making their intentions clear.

After the hand-off is done, I will be going as I said I would before, I just wanted to lay out these terms.

That’s it.

Cheers all, sorry to be a pain.
