Is paying for VHI myself worth it?

I was lay off and because of it I lost my vhi. I had the best plan of all, now if I want to have that same plan I have to pay 1500. Does anyone here have a cheaper plan? I never had to use vhi that much because I never had an emergency. Is it worth it if you do? Or if you get sick?
