The 2038 FIFA World Cup should not be held in the United States

Sports / Celebrities

The 2038 world cup is likely to be held in the United States (and possibly Canada and Mexico) because of eligibility requirements. While hosting the 2026 cup was nice, the 2038 cup should not be held here. If anything it should be in Mexico only.

Americans do not care about soccer. That is a fact. No amount of nagging by FIFA, corporations, politicians, media, and soccer hipsters will get us to care about the "beautiful game". If 40 million Mexicans and Mexican Americans couldn't make soccer popular in America, nothing will. Even the world cup didn't increase the popularity of the sport at all in this country.

During the 2026 world cup most Americans barely even knew it was happening. Christian Pulisic is the best American soccer player ever and the star of team USA and yet most Americans have no idea who he is. Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are arguably the 2 most famous people on earth yet most Americans have never head of them.

Soccer in America is a sport you put your 5-year-old child in so s/he can run around a field. It's a child's game here. Most kids who play soccer switch to football, basketball, baseball or ice hockey around 10-12 years old. Above this age it's basically a girl's sport. The best athletes (especially male athletes) don't go into soccer because football, basketball, and baseball are far more lucrative and their players are the popular kids in high school that attract the girls.

Soccer is also boring with low scores and frequent 0-0 ties. It's never going to even approach the NHL in popularity, let alone NFL, NBA, MLB, college football, or college basketball. In fact it's probably below golf, NASCAR, MMA/UFC and tennis. It's a sport for rich, pretentious hipsters and little children. Even in Los Angeles where I live it's a niche sport (and you'd expect it to be popular given demographics).

Americans don't want the world cup in this country and we don't care about soccer. It's boring. FIFA should hold it in Mexico instead and just accept that soccer will never be popular north of the Rio Grande, just as baseball will never be popular in India. In fact, soccer is going to continue to decline as illegals are deported and as the children of legal immigrants (especially Mexicans) assimilate.
