Counter Surfing Tips

Hi all - we have a 10 month old field golden who has always had some counter surfing issues, but has been getting worse recently. Our kitchen has shallow counters and an island, so it’s tough to put items completely out of his reach. Recently he’s been getting bolder about grabbing things from further back, both food and non-food stuff to chew on.

I’m curious for tips from anyone else that experienced this - first off is this common for puppies and is it possible he just grows out of this? He’s not neutered yet either so I’m wondering if that will make a difference once it’s done.

But if his lack of restraint is going to continue with age, how do you handle this? He’s pretty smart/sneaky about it already and won’t grab anything when we’re watching him, so it’s tough to give immediate negative feedback or do any sort of consistent training (and we admittedly haven’t for this reason).
