School failed to feed my child
My just turned 5 year old started kindergarten last week. She attends a small private school that caters daily hot lunches from different local vendors. Each day of the week is a different meal/vendor that repeats for that day of week for the entire month (I.e. pizza every Friday, chicken tenders every Monday, etc.) Parents pick and choose which days of the week the child will be receiving hot lunch and pay for the month in advance.
We decided to buy our daughter hot lunch 3 days of the week and pack her lunch the other 2 days. I still send her to school with a lunchbox everyday but on days she is to receive hot lunch, her lunch box only contains fruit and a small snack. The days she’s not receiving hot lunch, her lunchbox contains a full balanced meal. Today she was supposed to receive hot lunch, and she was particularly excited about it because it happens to be one of her favorite meals, but she was told by both her teacher and whoever was working in the cafeteria that she was not receiving hot lunch because her name wasn’t on the list. She was very upset after school when she was telling me this and thought I had lied to her about signing her up for today’s lunch.
Now this was an error on the school’s part as I later confirmed with the office that I had selected and paid for today’s meal, but for whatever reason she was left of the list or somehow overlooked. The school apologized for the mishap and said she should have been offered something else in place of hot lunch, like cereal or a sandwich but she was not offered anything—apparently another mishap, which they apologized for. So now not only did the school mess up and fail to give my child the meal I had signed her up for and paid for ($6 down the drain), but they actually failed to give her any food at all. Which means over the course of nearly 7 hours all she had to eat was a clementine and a handful of goldfish crackers that I had packed in her lunchbox as snack, nothing substantial.
The more I think about it the more upset I get because is no one checking to see that these 5 year olds all have something to eat? What if I hadn’t sent her with the fruit and crackers for snack, would they have left her with nothing all day? She’s supposed to get hot lunch again tomorrow but now I don’t trust that the school will actually see to it that she gets food. Do I just pack her more “back up” foods just incase? Should I put a note on her lunch box saying “please feed my child the meal I paid for today”?
