Bright-Dark is a tone-first, fiction-first, low-fantasy RPG built for grounded, human-scale stories. It’s classless, skill-less, and designed to avoid the bloat and complexity that creep into most fantasy systems.

Here’s what it does:

Core Mechanics

  • Roll 3d6 + Attribute + Talent vs a target number (TN)
  • Class-less and skill-less. Talents define your character; includes a catalog + DIY rules
  • Fiction‑First. Describe what you do; the rules follow the fiction
  • One action per turn. No playbooks, no action economy or tactical clutter
  • Equipment exists in the fiction, not on the character sheet

Tone & Genre

  • Tone-first design. Rules reinforce grounded, serious, human-scale play
  • Presented as low‑fantasy, but easily adapted to other genres
  • Social interaction and exploration handled through roleplay and description, not mechanics
  • Includes samples of play and guidance for running tone‑consistent scenes

Character Growth

  • Milestone improvement; choose an option from a list each milestone
  • No levels; grounded, human-scale advancement
  • Attributes reflect real-world strengths (a +3 is world-class)
  • HP stays low. No automatic HP growth

Magic & Abilities

  • Free-form magic. Choose a Talent that permits magic, then define your theme
  • Human-scale conflicts with an optional mythic expansion in the GM section

Design Philosophy

  • Avoids complexity and bloat
  • Grounded tone over kitchen-sink fantasy
  • Rules that support serious, emotionally legible play

If you want a fantasy game that’s simple, fiction‑first, and tone-driven, Bright‑Dark 3d6 might be exactly what you’re looking for. Bright‑Dark is a grounded, human-scale fantasy RPG about wounded worlds, quiet courage, and emotionally legible heroes. I wrote Bright-Dark because I wanted a fantasy game where tone matters more than tropes, and where heroes feel human instead of cartoonish.
