[Landlord US] Small landlords, are you still tracking expenses for Schedule E in a spreadsheet?
For those of you with just a few rentals, how are you actually keeping your expenses and receipts organized for Schedule E?
I keep seeing people mention some version of:
• Excel/Google Sheets for the expenses
• receipts/photos dumped into Google Drive
• then once a month or quarter manually matching everything up
If that’s what you do, I’m curious:
How much manual work does it actually create?
What part is most annoying, entering receipts, deciding which Schedule E category something belongs in, separating properties, finding missing receipts at tax time, or something else?
And have you tried landlord/accounting apps and gone back to spreadsheets? If so, why?
I’m specifically curious about small landlords rather than large property managers.
