Is my dealership screwing me over or am I being a Karen?
Hi all,
This is really long but I would really appreciate if someone could take the time to read this. I don’t have any adult figures in my life or anyone who knows anything abt cars so I truly don’t know how normal any of this is and if I’m over reacting
So back on July 11, I bought my first car from a dealership a state away from me, there were a few red flags during the test drive (they had not filled up the gas tank and I had to go buy more gas so that it wouldn’t run out, and then the truck did not start back up after I turned it off. This was my absolute dream truck (Toyota Tacoma 1998 4wd Xtra cab SR5, automatic. It has 155000 miles), and I had been searching for a year, so I ignored the red flags and bought the truck anyways for 13000. I wasn’t able to get a pre purchase inspection that day, but my dealership assured me that if any major problems showed up once I got it inspected back in my state, they would take care of it. I unfortunately didn’t get that in writing.
There was a 30 day warranty covering mechanical components. When I got my quote from my mechanic, all of the urgent to take care of category alone was $7000, including front lower control arms/bushings, rear leaf spring/suspension issue, rear shocks, carrier/driveshaft support bearing, front axle/CV axle issue, valve cover gaskets, and the brakes not stopping quickly when I push down.
I addressed all of this to my dealership very quickly, they ignored me until I kept pushing for them to take care of the items from the quote. I had to call them once a day for them to acknowledge me. They took it to their mechanic THREE TIMES and did not fix jack the first 2 times and never provided me a statement do what was actually done to the truck even though I texted and called them about it for weeks. I kept staying really polite but insistent and they brushed me off and told me that it’s an old truck and I have to expect that it’s going to have issues. I kept asking specifically what did and did not fall under the warranty and they NEVER gave me an answer. They fixed NOTHING that was on the list and instead fixed something that I didn’t even ask for them to fix bc it was low priority.
On the last day of my warranty, the battery died when I was on the freeway and my emergency brakes failed too and I got extremely lucky to be able to have enough room to slow down without my brakes. They finally at this point offered to tow it back to the other state again to get it fixed. I’ve spent hundreds on train tickets at this point going and picking up the truck over and over.
They finally just gave me a statement from what their mechanic did this time and it looks like they replaced the alternator, replaced (only one side) a control arm bushing, bleeding the brake system, and replaced the shocks &/or struts. It’s more than they’ve ever done previously, but they still did not take care of a lot of the stuff that I’m concerned about.
I just want to know at this point are they deliberately trying to fuck me over (and I should keep pushing or file a complaint), or am I being way too entitled and making the lives of everyone at this dealership miserable? Please someone help me🙏
