Anything to do in Yongzhou/Lingling, Hunan?

🗺️ Trip Reports & Itineraries

I have an upcoming 64 day trip to Asia. Malaysia, Vietnam, and China. 6 nights in Chongqing, 8 in Chengdu, two weeks in Yunnan (Shuhe, Shaxi, Weishan, Xizhou, three days each, and one in Mengzi to make transit into Vietnam much less stressful), a week in Vietnam, then back to China, Nanning, Lingling, Changsha, Shaoxing, and finishing with five nights in Qingdao.

I chose Yongzhou Lingling for three nights essentially because it seems to be pretty random and unheard of (my Chinese friends laughed, "There's actually a place called Lingling?!?"). I just looked at the places between Nanning and Changsha and chose it almost at random. I've watched the few videos about it on WeChat and YouTube, but I'd love to hear from anyone who's actually been there. I want a place that's totally untouristed, very local, somewhere unique even if boring. With all the temples, markets, mountains, and museums I plan on seeing elsewhere, having a boring stop for a few days might be relaxing.

That said, I'm still wondering what in the world I'm gonna do there. Any ideas? I know there's some inscriptions in a cave nearby and the Liuzi Temple and Nvshu history, so I'm sure I can keep busy. Is there a night or morning market to check out in the area?
