Door knocking and deer gawking

I walked my dog this afternoon through a nearby neighbourhood. Near the end of our route, we passed a house with a front door close to the sidewalk, where I heard knocking… from the inside!

My dog and I paused in mild bewilderment, both tilting our heads in confusion. I wondered with some amusement whether I should shout “come out!” before an older man opened the door, stepped out, and asked if I had seen the buck in his yard; I had not.

The three of us wandered around the corner and encountered a massive antlered fella. Part of me thought “cool!” while another part thought “so this is how I die.” I enjoy deer, yet I always worry about a hoof to the head or an antler to the chest.

Fortunately, the buck bucked off, and the old man proudly told me about all the plants in his yard that deer enjoy eating.
