A month into exchange semester and I wanna go home
I’m a European exchange student in the US. The short story is that I feel scammed about finances by my host institution.
Last year when I was choosing what uni to go to, my host uni promoted a very attractive tuition reduction for international students. After admission and shortly before departure they said there was some misunderstanding and the reduction would only be about 20% of what was previously promoted. But since all application deadlines for other colleges had already passed when this was announced, I decided to stick with this one. It was a big mistake.
Now, after the tuition and all mandatory fees have already been paid, the college keeps coming up with new expensive fees that have never been communicated before and that were not in the tuition calculator either. Nobody can tell me what specific services these fees are for (they’re usually just called administration or management fees), and I’m finding it increasingly difficult to enjoy my stay here, because I’m constantly afraid what financial stunt they will pull next. It is very unpredictable and intransparent. The internationals office is not willing to help at all, and I feel like there is nobody I can reach out to who actually cares.
Since I’m already way over budget with all the unexpected costs despite the buffer I had, and since the quality of the education and whole experience is not worth it for me, at this point I’m considering to just go home.. I feel really frustrated about everything.
Just curious to hear some perspectives, advice, or just kind words. Anything is appreciated! Has anybody been in a similar situation?
