There's a specific blue that only shows up at the edges of things. Shallow water over sand. The sky right above a desert horizon. It's the color people have been reaching for since long before anyone could name it.

The dial is turquoise. Look at it in daylight and the veining runs in thin dark lines across the face, gathering in some places, thinning out in others, never quite symmetrical.

Brown leather. A compass on the bezel. A blue that belongs outdoors.

**What Makes a Good Turquoise Dial**

Turquoise is judged on three things.

Color first. The blue should be even and saturated, not chalky, not washed out toward grey. Ours sits on the paler, brighter side of the range — closer to open sky than to deep ocean.

Then the veining. Too little and the dial reads flat, like painted enamel. Too much and it turns muddy. What you want is a fine, dark, irregular web that gives the surface depth without fighting the hands for attention.

Then the finish. By watch standards, a rushed polish leaves it slightly dull, with the veins sitting proud of the surface. Ours goes through progressive stages until the face is flat enough that light slides across it cleanly and the veining reads as pattern, not texture.
