For me, writing in this vertical script is the most practical and enjoyable way to write.

I can write it with mostly finger/hand movements which has a couple benefits over pure arm movement: 1) I can write much smaller and 2) it’s easier to write in less than ideal positions (e.g. writing in my lap).

I use the Palmer grip and hold the pen lightly, which allows me to write without pain. Probably not as pain free as pure arm movement, but I’ve never wrote long enough to find out.

The vertical part is critical. The up and down movements required by the vertical script are so much more natural and less stressful on the hand than the movements required by slanted writing.

Of course, side to side movements are required. The trick is to get into a groove where you have slow, relatively constant arm movement taking you across the page while the mostly up and down movements of the hand/fingers create the letters. There’s a really beautiful flow to it once you figure it out.

Does it look as good as slanted script? I’d say it looks less formal than slanted script, but that’s not a big deal when writing in a journal, a birthday card, or wherever slanted movement isn’t necessary or practical.
