New MSW grad with an LSW… how are we supposed to get experience when every job wants 2–5 years?
I just graduated with my master’s in social work and I’m already getting so frustrated with this job search!
I did my internship at a hospital trauma clinic and loved it. I really wanted to stay, but they weren’t able to hire me because of funding, so I’ve been trying to find something similar in hospital social work, trauma, behavioral health, crisis, or another clinical setting.
The issue is almost everything I’m seeing wants 2-5 years of experience.
Like… how am I supposed to get 2-5 years of experience if nobody wants to hire new grads 😭
I have my LSW and solid clinical internship experience, but that still doesn’t seem to be enough for a lot of these positions.
Then the places that are willing to interview me are offering like $50k-$55k a year for master’s-level clinical work, and I’m sorry but that just feels insane. I know social work is underpaid in general, but after rent, student loans, car expenses, groceries, insurance, etc., that really does not feel livable in Chicago.
I’m not expecting to make 6 figures straight out of school. I just want something that feels reasonable for having a graduate degree and a license.
For people who graduated recently, how did you get your first decent social work job? Did you just take whatever you could get for a year or two and then move on? Are there certain settings that are actually willing to hire new grads?
Because right now it feels like every posting is either “entry level” but somehow wants 3 years of experience, or it pays barely enough to survive lol.
