Novartis likely to be a customer of Clinical Intelligence Platform and how we're modelling the Exact Sciences Playbook
There are deep ties and synergies between Novartis and Cerenome. The first and most apparent is;
Radiotherapeutic data, mandate and areas of focus;
- their natural focus and prioritization of Radiotherapeutics ( via RLTs)and theranostic platforms.
- Their core technical assets and strategic mandates explicitly overlap with Cerenome I.e expanding its RLT pipeline, aggressive AI adoption and scaling it's neuroscience footprint.
-They have a deep focus in Neurology(just acquired pre clinical BBB penetrating molecules/delivery platform with this in mind for $125m upfront), Oncology (RLTs) and Immunology(cell therapies like CAR-T)
- Novartis explicitly states that to them AI is about accelerating decision-making and they actively seek outside expertise rather than building all software in-house. One of their core pillars is to become the tech eco-systems top pharmaceutical partner.
BIOCEPT, Novartis(Genoptix) and Samantha Fowlkes
- as we all know Samantha Fowlkes was previously at Caris and prior to that she was at Genoptix. Genoptix was acquired by Novartis in 2011 for $470m(circa $700m today accounting for inflation-more accounting for average increase in deal-size relative) which was part of their build-out of molecular and companion diagnostics segments at the time.
- Dr. Edward Rosol(Headed up biomarker debelopment and translational research at Novartis- Now on our Board of Directors)
- Not sure if anyone's here knew the BIOCEPT management team but a fair few of them worked at Genoptix in leadership teams and then some Novartis post acquisition (Phillippe Marchand, Samuel D.Riccitelli, David Karlander(also worked at Exact Sciences before Abbott purchase)
To conclude there is a lot of crossover here and naturally The clinical intelligence provided from our platform spanns across the entirety of Novartis' focus. A licensing agreement to utilize Cerenome's platform in some guise or another also very much fits their mandates of partnering to accelerate decision-making and it is evident the connection to Novartis has been apparent with CNSide from Biocept inception.
BIOCEPT, Exact Sciences and Abbott (Russell Bradley our GM)
There is a lot of overlap of key personnel here both when looking at Biocept and Cerenome, Exact Sciences and Abbott;
- Dr. Michael C. Dugan(Chief medical Officer at Biocept and leading pathology and ops roles at Exact), David Karlander (Oncology Sales Director at Exact and Head of Commercial Ops at Biocept)
Cerenome/Abbott
-Ron Andrews (Marketing Director at Abbott Diagnostics)
-Russell Bradley(Divisional Vice President and GM of their Hematology Business Unit)
Exact Sciences is one of those stories that every company in the micro-cap space looks at with envy:
-They were continually diluted, had executed RS to maintain listing and was pretty much shunned and in the scrap-heap of normal micro-cap dung before they had a complete leadership overhaul in 2009. I guess the parralell here would be the rebrand in respect of resets although to be seen.
-They also made the pivot from standalone lab as a service model to one of being an integrated platform relying on 'Three Core Pillars'- Sounds familiar I guess.
- First their CEO focused on solving the logistics for their core test 'Cologuard' - getting Medicare coverage, FDA approval(needed in that space), a unique billing code and embedding their ordering system and information exchange directly with EPIC
-Exact also realised they needed to expand their test to become an integrated oncology platform and made some acquisitions and partnerships (like Genomic Health to become a pan-cancer company) I guess in some ways mirrors are partnership to expand NGS testing.
- What was Exacts moat and how did they win? Integration, integration, intrgration:
It was the integration that allowed them to become an operational, logistical and computational infrastructure powerhouse.
-Exact Nexus Platform:This was a proprietary It and logistical network and this efrectively integrated them directly into the backbone of the US Healthcare system connecting with EPIC allowing seamless order flow and effectigely automated the entire patient, ordering cycle etc. as well as giving valuable information to doctors and capturing that data internally
- They partnered deeply with AWS HealthOmics to build automated cloud-based architecture.
In 2025 as Exact moved toward it's final whopper $23bn buyout by Abbott they began aggressively incorporating external AI to prepare for the future of multi cancer detection signing an $885m exclusive licensing deal with FREENOME.
Exact Sciences integrated FREENOMEs multi-modal molecular AI models with it's own RW patient data library and registry to define how blood tests catch early-stagr tumor fragments (naturally using agentic AI to do this)
As we can see there are some marked similarities between Exact Sciences and Cerenome's journey and strategy here and most certainly some crossover in staff between Exact(Abbott) Biocept (CNSide) and Cerenome.
Let's hope Cerenome can achieve a similar valuation in due course. Best of luck.
