TL;DR: Been having a ton of fun using this 14k gold Wahl-Eversharp nib in my Kaweco Brass, even if it’s not a perfect fit. Also surprised to find out it’s possibly some kind of stub/oblique nib.

(The nib was salvaged from a crushed Skyline I got off eBay. I don’t recommend sacrificing vintage pens that can be restored.)

Over a year ago I purchased the mangled remains of a Wahl-Eversharp Skyline that looked like it was drug out of the bottom of the ocean. The nib, although heavily corroded, looked okay enough that I thought it could be salvaged and used in another Skyline I was restoring. That didn’t quite work out, and on top of that, the nib had a crack at the base (I made a post about that a year ago, you can look it up on my profile).

I could get the nib to friction fit into a Jinhao 82, which I've had success with other vaguely #5 sized nibs, but it wasn’t a great experience, and I was worried that continued use in a pen it wasn’t designed for would make that crack worse, as the crack was pointed upward towards the tip.

I decided to carefully sand down the base of the nib until the crack was no more. This took forever, but it actually ended up working… I noticed after I was done that it now resembled a Kaweco nib in size.

I tried to see if the nib could fit in a Kaweco Sport, but the Kaweco’s feed is grooved on the sides so the nib fits securely, which didn’t work for the contours on the Eversharp nib. It also has the slightest “bump” or curve to the top of the feed, which causes the tip of the feed to not fit flush to the nib.

So, I decided to see if I could fix this. I have a dud of a Kaweco Sport that leaks all the time sitting in a drawer unused. I took the feed of that pen, and lightly sanded down that grooved step-up so the Eversharp nib would fit as flush as possible. This ended up working, although the nib now just kind of floats on top of the feed, held by friction, susceptible to some shifting.

It’s by no means a perfect fit, and when it shift out of alignment, the tines do too. But there is a sweet spot, and when in that sweet spot, it writes great!

The biggest surprise is the nib seems to be some kind of oblique/stub nib. It doesn’t look like one visually, but I’m getting a lot of line variation out if it, in a relatively thin line weight, which is EXACTLY what I was looking for for a nib in my Kaweco Brass.

Recently I’ve been getting into stub nibs, and wanted to try Kaweco’s stub nib but haven’t read great reviews, so finding out this Eversharp nib is some form of fine stub/oblique has been a nice surprise.

Overall, the nib has some good bounce to it. I might explore seeing if I can adjust that feed more, or maybe even try again with a new feed, to see if I can solve the shifting/alignment issue. The nib does have more feedback than I normally like, but in the meantime, it’s been a super fun writer as a pocket journal pen!

Kaweco Brass/Eversharp Skyline nib swap.
