Trazzy for spay recovery!
I just got my mini dachshund spayed (a year old) and was so stressed about her energy levels. My baby is HIGH energy. She literally doesn’t have an off switch, she could play and run around all day and still never stay still. I knew it was going to be impossible to keep her down for an entire week. The vet ended up giving me Trazodone to keep her calm and i was hesitant because I didn’t want to add another med on top of her pain meds and I also wasn’t convinced it would work lol. It has SAVED both of us. The vet recommended keeping her on a strict schedule of 1/4 a pill every 12 hours for the first few days- to a week to help keep her calm and help aid recovery. The day we brought her home, night time rolled around and she already wanted to start running and playing. I gave her the pain meds and trazodone and she was yoinked 45 mins later and down for the night. It worked so well, i actually called the emergency vet because I thought something was wrong lol. It definitely makes me a little sad because I miss her crazy personality and our play times, but I know it’s just temporary and will help us both with her recovery tremendously. My vet explained that dachshunds tend to have more complications from spays due to their energy levels and how fragile their under sides are being so close to the ground. If your baby rips their stitches, it’s another $400 and unnecessary pain for them. If you have a high energy baby who needs to be spayed or fixed, definitely ask your vet for Trazodone! It’s a life saver.
Some other things that I’d recommend..
-
Wipes. Baby wipes or hypoallergenic unscented dog wipes will be a huge help! My baby had some accidents right after her procedure so being able to wipe her down and keep her clean and comfy was great.
-
F the E collar. My baby hated it. We got a donut from Amazon and she tolerated that a lot more than the cone. It’s also a lot safer to use when she’s in her crate since it’s softer.
-
Surgical suits! I got 3 to swap out and that’s also been a huge help. Even though the tolerates the donut, she still doesn’t like it and my goal is to cause her the least amount of stress possible while she recovers. The surgical onsies are comfy but still make sure they wont mess with their incision!

Soaking kibble in water. For some reason my baby didn’t want to drink much water for a few days after her procedure, so i mixed some water in with her kibble to keep her hydrated.
I just wanted to post this here incase anyone is getting their baby spayed soon and needed some tips! (Especially for the high energy weens) I hope this helps someone!!
