Hellraiser revival demo.
Well.. I played it on steam with a pretty good PC and here is what I have to say about it.
The first thing I noticed is that even on medium level settings (my PC can typically handle much more than that) the cutscenes are incredibly choppy. I think they did tell us that this was from a lesser polished version but that doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Why put out a lesser demo to get people to want to play your game if it's not up to par? But let's assume that is something that will be fixed and is not going to be an issue.
I love the world that they built and I found the characters somewhat interesting and would like to get to know them more. The graphics, sound and atmosphere were all very nicely done. It genuinely feels like the hellraiser universe. This definitely seems like a story that could have been a movie. In my opinion it might have better been served that way.
Overall the gameplay was not in my wheelhouse. It felt like the game Agony or Outlast but set in the hellraiser universe. The puzzles I encountered were fairly simple and the stealth assassination approach to your enemies was pretty good sometimes; but the combat was jarring and felt a bit disjointed (think old school resident evil frustrating controls).
As a huge fan of the franchise, running away from the chatterer felt really cool for a couple of minutes. I even loved the death cinematics he gave me but after a little while it got old and I just wanted to move on with the story. I felt that being chased and timed had robbed me of some enjoyment that I otherwise could have had exploring the hellraiser universe in video game form.
Overall I think this was a great idea for a very specific kind of survival horror video game fan. I unfortunately am not that kind of fan. The demo has shown me that I will not want to ever buy this video game but I do want to experience the story so I will be waiting for it to come to YouTube without commentary.
I give the idea and the art five stars but the actual game the demo only one. It simply isn't my kind of game at all but for those of you that like that sort of game, you're probably going to love this. It does seem actually a bit more approachable than agony.
