Need help. Not sure if I am ready for a pet.

I just recently lost my dog a week ago..... And now my church has a stray cat that needs a home, she seems so sweet. She did come up to me and is very friendly. I just really dont know if I am ready for a pet yet. Im very scared, but at the same time a single cat is what I would want. I just really dont know what to do.... I dont want to regret taking this cat in, she is very friendly kept rubbing on me and letting me pet her. Ugh any advice?
