26 month old, I feel like I’m losing my mind
My daughter is 26 months today. She’s been showing lots of interest in the potty for a few months, mostly asking to sit on the potty. We watch some potty videos, read books and talk about it a lot so she knows that’s where the pee and poo goes and that soon she won’t need her diaper anymore.
She tells me when she needs to pee/poo and when she wants to sit on the potty. Obviously, I oblige. But she doesn’t release. Ever. (Except 1 pee and 1 poo that happened as a one-off months ago).
Beyond not releasing, she doesn’t actually want to sit on the potty when she really has to pee (I can tell when she needs to go) or poo. Resisting to the point where she is hysterical. I took this as a sign to back off on any prompting like “I think you need to pee. Let’s go to the potty”.
But now we’re in this grey zone where she will ask to use the potty, but she won’t pee/poo. Then she will refuse to wear her diaper until she eventually has an accident (a few drops of full release) on the floor. Once she has an accident, she again refuses to go to the potty to finish and we once picked her up and placed her on the potty and she lost it again. Other times she’ll beg for a diaper to pee/poo in instead of the potty and I give it to her to cause indoor want her to be in distress.
I don’t want to force the potty training, especially since we don’t have time yet to keep her home and bottomless but I can’t imagine it would go well anyways. I just feel like I’m at my wits end cause of this loop where she eventually has an accident and is losing her mind. I can’t even get her to help me clean up the mess as a teaching moment cause she gets upset and pouty.
How do I avoid a negative association with the potty? How can I get her to release? I tried introducing a candy as a reward but no luck, videos during the potty don’t work either and now she just wants to want videos on the potty instead of peeing so I don’t want to continue that. I made a potty chart but I didn’t introduce it to her yet cause of how she reacts to the potty when she needs to pee/poo and since I can’t keep her home for bottomless training at the moment.
