Lender advice - competitive market

Finances

Offer accepted, inspection Thursday in a relatively hot market ( Hudson valley NY).

I’m putting more than 30% down. I have the same stable job for 5+y and excellent credit score.

I’ve been working with the lender my realtor recommended on the pre-approvals, a local mortgage bank. The realtor is a close family friend so I trust she’s not trying to screw me over but she is old and set in her ways. Things were going along fine. My lawyer mentioned I needed to confirm the lender before going to contract.

I’ve had great experience with a previous loan with my credit Union so thought I would get a competing quote from them just to make an informed decision.

So I reached out to the original mortgage guy I’ve been talking to and he refused to provide any quotes on fees or interest rates before it goes to contract and threatened that if I went with a credit Union my offer would probably be rejected, because he’s a respected lender.

That’s total bullshit right? Or does the lender really matter in a tight market? Is a credit union seen as a less reliable lender even when the buyer is strongly qualified?
