Am I Screwed?

I had health insurance through work and it covered myself and my husband, when he got his new job in December we decided to switch to his insurance. I sent an email to my provider at work to cancel, that same week my best friend unexpectedly passed away.

Here I am 8 months later realizing that I am still paying for my insurance (which I didn't realize because I don't always check my paystubs since I get auto deposit which I know is my fault). I contacted my boss and it looks like the insurance provider through work sent an email for me to file to cancel, which I guess in my state of mind at the time missed the email and assumed they canceled it for me (not exactly sure what happened there obviously was in a horrible mental state).

I know I am clearly at fault for this, but I'm out almost $5,000 so I am freaking out. Is there ANY way at all I would be able to be reimbursed or file a complaint to get ANYTHING back from what I didn't use for my insurance? I am so desperate, please help!
