Stale smell in car

A couple of months ago when washing the car I left the window open and managed to get dirty water from the bucket into the cabin. Now the car smells like an old rag.
Totally disgusting. I can mask it with air fresheners but any thoughts on how I could remove it please? I was thinking of borrowing a vax to clean the footwell carpet - which I think is the main contributor.
