Made a mistake at work, help?
Hi,
Need some reassuring words that this isn’t going to end my life lol. I’ve been at my role for 10 months now and I’ll be honest by saying some days feel more difficult than others. It’s a highly demanding role where we focus on data as well as account managing for clients. The client aspect of the role is usually pretty easy for me and I find enjoyment in it. However, the data aspect of the role of where I struggle, my skills aren’t the sharpest but I still try my best.
Since I’ve started the role I’ve been feeling inadequate at my role. The training at the company hasn’t been the best so everything I know is what I’ve taught myself. This is completely different to the roles I did at my previous jobs where the training was intense. My manager can be a bit lazy but I’ve decided that I’m willing to teach myself and usually just ask him questions on things I’m not familiar with.
We were asked to create a tracker on excel for a data task we are doing. I volunteered as I had a bit of free time. I followed all the steps on how to create the tracker so that I wasn’t getting anything wrong. Half way through my internet wasn’t working so I had to stop what I was doing and restart my laptop. My manager gave my 30 mins to complete the task. Anyway, once I restarted I went back to the place I left off. Somehow, rather than editing the downloaded copy my computer took my to the live copy (I had no idea, this must have happened when I restarted) and I carried on editing the live version of it all. I had no idea until my manager angrily messaged me and told me to immediately stop.
I explained I had edited the downloaded version (showed him a screenshot of the downloaded file) he wasn’t impressed and responded “but it is wrong you was editing the live version, stop right now” I apologised profusely and he’s not responded since then.
I’ll be honest I’ve had a breakdown as I already felt like I was failing and this confirmed it all.
Please give me advice that I’m not losing my mind and this is major…..
