I’m 24 years old and the Jeff the Killer picture still unsettles me.
I first saw Jeff the Killer when I was in middle school. It was absolutely horrifying. It invoked a fight or flight response in me. Once I got used to seeing it, I was able to suppress this reaction but I could never fully get it to go away; some part of me would still be feeling unsettled, but I could turn the noise down on it in my brain. I remember showing my cousin it as a kid and it scared him so much he had a nightmare. And cruel middle school me got a kick out of that so I slowly associated it with a funny horror prank on my cousin. But even then, it was still just turning down the noise of the discomfort it made me feel.
Jump forward 12 years and I’m watching a video by Nexpo (I just found his channel, and if you’re into internet horror I recommend him). I don’t think it was even meant to be a jump scare, but when a picture of Jeff the killer appeared on my screen I had a visceral reaction.
It’s not like a childhood horror that’s stuck with me. It genuinely feels like a primal fear response. I’m an adult, I’ve watched scary movies, I’ve been jump scared, but I can still rationalize the fear away. For some reason, Jeff the Killer is the hardest fear reaction to fiction for me to quell. Maybe I’m just a scaredy cat, but if so, I’m only one for this particular picture. I know I’ve stated this already but it is really hard to overstate how this feels. It’s not like “oh this is scary! He’s gonna get me!” It’s like every single cell in my body is telling me to get away from it. My hair stands up all over my body, my muscles constrict, it feels like my body is getting me ready to run or fight (I know this is just fight or flight but it feels so primal). This sounds way more dramatic than it is. I’d say it’s 4/10 for how strong these reactions can get. It’s still more than I’ve gotten from any other picture. But it’s still 7/10 for unsettling me.
I think this is called the uncanny valley effect. It makes me even sicker to my stomach to think there’s a reason we evolved to be scared of that stuff. What on Earth was threatening us that Jeff the Killer reminds our reptile brain about? Jeez.
Does anyone else relate to this or am I just a wuss?
