Usefulness of Coffee

New to the game and in ME now. I just took a territory that has a coffee deposit. I built a coffee roaster before I started looking around to see what its usefulness is. Running up the tech tree there are no demands for coffee. At the moment I can't look into how many demands are made for coffee in trade to negotiate rather than fight. Is that where it comes in handy?
