Can I research + buy the f18c late without having to research + buy the f18a early?

Stupid question, but I only play this game in short phases every once in a while.

I owned the f14a, before the f18’s were added. I have the ability to research either the f18a or f18c in the same folder, and I want the C because it’s less RP and (hopefully) a better aircraft overall. My fear is that I’ll research the C only to be told that I have to research or buy the A first, which would suck.

Thank you in advance and sorry for dumb question 🙏
