Did your floaters start while you were becoming nearsighted? And has anyone had LASIK with floaters?

Question

Hey everyone,

I've had floaters for about 2 years now. Until I was 18 I had perfect 20/20 vision and no floaters. Then I started needing glasses. It was very mild at first, but it kept getting worse, and now I'm at around -2.00 and wear glasses all day.

Somewhere around -1.5 the floaters showed up too. It felt pretty sudden. I first noticed them on white PDFs at work, and then they were noticeable everywhere, especially on white backgrounds or in bright sunlight. They're really annoying.

I have two questions:

  1. Did your floaters start while you were becoming nearsighted? Or did most of you get them out of nowhere, with otherwise perfect vision? My doctor told me floaters are more common in people with myopia, and I'm curious how well that matches your experience.
  2. Has anyone with floaters had LASIK? I'm planning to get it. I know floaters are in the vitreous and LASIK works on the cornea, so in theory they're unrelated. Still, I have a bit of hope that things could improve. If you had LASIK, did your floaters stay the same, get more noticeable, or get less noticeable afterward?

Thanks, I'd love to hear your stories and thoughts!
