Do the Skyborne Start Too Big for WoW Forever?

Forever

I think one of the biggest things Classic WoW gets right is how simple the world feels at the beginning, and how naturally it ramps up from there.

And I think that's why I'm a little unsure about the Skyborne.

It reminds me of classics where the villain didn't immediately have to be some universe-destroying god. Sometimes the bad guy was just... a bad guy. You don't need Marvel-level stakes right when the story starts. Pokemon with Gary and then Team Rocket, Dragonball starts with tournaments, bandits, but one that really stands out that does a great job introducing a world slowly to the reader/viewer is Harry Potter books/movies without it going over the top too quickly.

The original classic did an amazing job in this regard as well. Look at the early Classic dungeons.

Ragefire Chasm? You're fighting troggs, cultists, and a satyr with a sword. Perfect.

Deadmines? A bunch of angry workers turned pirates hiding in an old mine. One of the bosses is literally a goblin driving a shredder. A work vehicle...

Shadowfang Keep? A creepy wizard locked himself inside a haunted castle and started doing terrible experiments.

Next dungeon? Religious fanatics have taken over an old monastery.

You get my point.

None of this needs an elemental plane, ancient magical civilization, disappearing spirits, or some massive supernatural crisis to get you invested.

And that's what makes the later stuff feel so much bigger.

You start out killing kobolds because they stole someone's candles. Then you discover the Defias Brotherhood. Then the Scarlet Crusade. Then you're dealing with trolls, undead, ogres, dragons, the Dark Iron dwarves, Blackrock Mountain, the Black Dragonflight, Ragnaros, and eventually threats like Nefarian and Kel'Thuzad.

The world slowly opens up and basically tells you, "There's a lot more going on here than you realized."

That's what makes Classic feel like an adventure.

You're not immediately introduced as some important champion dealing with an enormous magical crisis. You're basically some random adventurer helping a farmer with wolves, delivering supplies, and clearing bandits out of a mine.

And that's where the Skyborne make me a little nervous especially when compared to the other races and how they start off.

Skyborne's starting point is pretty crazy compared to the other races.

They have cool Warcraft lore without a doubt, just out of place...

But it also feels like the Skyborne are starting where Classic WoW used to end up.

Classic was great at taking something mundane and slowly revealing the fantasy underneath it. You didn't start with Ragnaros. You started with some angry kobolds in a mine. Ragnaros meant something because of everything that came before him.

The crazy stuff absolutely belongs in Warcraft.

I just think you should have to discover it.

Give me a reason to care about the local bandits before you explain the ancient magical catastrophe.

Let me fight some pirates, angry gnolls, and a few pissed off employees.

Not really expecting anything to change, but I just hope if more stuff is developed in the future, the buildup of the story is taken into deeper consideration before introducing new stories.

Anyways... looking forward for the game none the less.
