Stopping Insulin due to good glucose numbers - horrible mistake or pathway to remission?
Hi All!
I posted here last week that I didn't feel comfortable giving my cat insulin based on his glucose number (92 mg / dL). Everyone advised I joined the Facebook page for Feline Diabetes, and the admins there agreed, but my vet was still pushing me to administer 2 units of glargine versus 3 units for the next 3 days. I administered 2 units at his insistence one more time. The next time for dosing he was down to 77 mg/dL, and I decided I absolutely would not dose him at that number. Now for 3 days I have not given him any insulin because he has consistently been in a normal glucose range (aside from the 77 post insulin, he has been between 89-125 mg/dL).
Is this what remission looks like, or should I be working with my vet to reduce insulin first and taper? Even the 2 units seemed to drive his glucose too low. Am I setting him up for DKA by just immediately stopping, or is it appropriate to continue to withold glargine, a long-acting insulin, based on these cues?
My vet did not seem very remission focused and never talked about what this could look like. He also never really focused on my cat's diet which is what I think lead to these better numbers. Following my gut, my cat has been more himself these 3 days off insulin than he has been the past 2 months on it.
I am waiting to hear back from my vet, but our trust is pretty low at this point, so I kinda just wanted to hear if anyone else went through remission, and what that looked like.
