Ranking my top 5 Blue Lock Japan player abilities

SpoilerManga Discussion

At this point this manga is pretty much a battle shonen, so I’m gonna rank my top 5 favourite abilities strictly from the Blue Lock Japan team, not counting Sae or Nagi.

5. Isagi
Adaptation is a great ability. It allows Isagi to always have a problem to solve, and a way to endlessly upgrade himself. The only problem is that adaptation takes time, so the impact is gradual rather than immediate. Direct Shot is also underrated because of how hard it is to consistently pull off volleys, but I do see it being so effective mostly because of adaptation.

4. Reo
Copy is in a way similar to adaptation, but it uses a pre-trained series of moves and forces Reo to choose the right move in different scenarios. The physical limit also prevents Reo from becoming overpowered. I see this as restricted adaptation, which feels more concrete for me.

3. Yukimiya
Such a versatile player. You have the on-the-ball street dribbling which exploits tight spaces with stop-and-go speed, you have the Sword Screws which dips the ball to pierce the net, and now you have the Predator Eyes to hunt loose balls, which recently permitted a dipping volley to go in. A complete offensive set of abilities, each with a sense of urgency to grab even the slightest chance to get success. It helps that this kind of ‘threading the needle’ playstyle does yield Yukimiya many failed shots, making him a flawed ability user with room to grow.

2. Karasu
One of the coldest auras via crows, using arms to gauge space to retain the ball, exploiting weaknesses from opponents to win duels, physically holding back defenders to create chances, and extreme calmness under pressure to sacrifice for the team. The fact that Karasu sees himself ordinary in a superpowered world makes him interesting to follow, and how much he needs to push himself to stay competent.

1. Barou
This guy is the villain in a story where everyone wants to be a hero. Yes he refuses to pass, but beyond that is a person who experienced despair, and decided to double down. It should not work, and that’s why he’s so fascinating every time he uses his abilities. Teammate gets the ball? Steals it from them and hoard the spotlight. Team is completely working for me? Hijack the system so you can feel more pressure. Two MV users blocking you? Force a triple nutmeg and score. Barou is the best to follow because you never know his next move, and yet, you know exactly what his pattern is. Plus with his chop dribbling, physical charges, and ranged shots, he is just an absolute machine.
