Recently I (21M) had an argument over a friend (22M) of mine (not the one in the pic) over something I find incredibly stupid, and i think i might end things with them over it depending on their reaction.
After the two of ys not really talking for a few days (lifes busy), he messages me and the topic of a halloween costume comes up regarding a party.
I didnt really have a costume in mind but i remember i bought a pair of cheap cat ears for a costume i had to a different party and semi jokingly went “emo catboy”.
In response this friend of mine started berating me over it, calling me a “pick me”, “boring”, “dry” and just other not necessarily crude but still surprisingly hurtful things.
This basically came out of nowhere, i had no idea why he was suddenly incredibly rude to me over my choice of costume, especially because in my eyes it wasn’t really that deep but the words cut deep to me. I considered this person to be a nice guy so when he started to tear my idea to shreds and call me these things it really hurt my feelings.
This didnt help as when i ask him if he’s serious about what he was saying he said yes, and i sent a voice message explaining that this was really hurtful to me and i would appreciate some maturity.
He responded with a voice message himself saying that “it’s not that deep”, “it’s just a joke” and “You’ve ragged me for stuff I like too”.
Right after that I wrote up a paragraph that better articulated my feelings, basically saying I was disappointed in the way he was treating me as it hurt my feelings, I’d like to talk more calmly about it and asked him what stuff I have ragged on him for.
some context here is that I am autistic and sometimes I can be a bull in a ceramic shop when it comes to things like banter. It’s not common but it also isn’t unheard of for me to say the wrong thing and be told at a later date that it hurt someones feelings. Whilst it is shameful, it doesn’t matter that I didn’t intend for that meaning, it still hurt their feelings. I typically would explain that i didnt intend for that and apologise for it, asking what i can do in future to be kinder.
Ive never had someone react negatively to this and in all honesty it’s made some of my friendships even tighter.
I explained this also to him, and that if i have hurt his feelings it didnt come from ill intent but I am still willing to make amends as i had hurt his feelings, however he has simply now left me on read after sending me a voice message of him just coughing.
Later today i talked to a mutual friend of ours about it, and she said to me that he’s just a “rage baiter” and that he’s just like this. Now first off, I have never seen him act like this with me and ive known this guy for a few months now, and second off I get rage bait and I know he was joking but he still had really hurt my feelings, and when i asked if he was serious he said yes and kept going, all while saying “it’s not that deep”.
To me that doesn’t seem like ragebaiting, that is just bullying. All throughout primary and high school (Australia splits middle school between the two for the yanks reading) i was bullied by people who were my supposed “friends” and acted the exact same way as this, poking at me and making fun of me and when i react in any way it’s “just a joke”.
It was so bad that I now have zero connections with people from high school and primary school, i spent over a year alone with no friends as id have rathered that then to be attached to people who hate me, and whilst today i have more friends and much more happy, the way this guy is acting is reminiscent of this behaviour from previous people.
So, this leads me to my current conniption; I explained that my feelings were hurt, and then when he kept going i said he’s being a cunt and insulted his choice of costume too (he wanted me and him to do matching costumes of a gay couple from s movie which i was way too uncomfortable with doing and said no, especially considering he’s gay and im Bi). I apologised for both of my comments but he hasnt seen any of my messages yet, and I am honestly considering cutting him out of my life if he isn’t going to apologise for the way he treated me. I know he was joking, I know he was doing it on purpose; it also hurt my feelings and when i asked him if he was being serious he kept going, making it worse significantly. He had so many chances to apologise and didnt, choosing to keep going or to leave me on seen.
But at the same time this same mutual friend of mine has said that I am overreacting, he’s just like this. And that if i was to cut him out itd be silly. But, im a grown man. I spent over a year alone, with no one because id rather that then deal with this behaviour. But am i truely overreacting to this guy, building a shell around me to stop me from growing or am i maturing and stopping things from growing and hurting me further in the future?

Beautiful spice bag at the pub with my mate. Im unsure of if i am growing up or growing a shell.
